Kenya Safari Guide
Everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip. From understanding the seasonal migrations to choosing the right region for your interests.
Planning Your Dream Safari
Kenya is an all-year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Understanding these shifts is key to fulfilling your safari expectations.
Whether you want to witness the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration, see newborn calves in the green season, or enjoy the clear views of Kilimanjaro, timing is everything.
Best Time to Visit
High Season (Dry)
July - October & January - February
- Great Migration: The herds are in the Mara (July-Oct).
- Wildlife: Easy to spot as grass is short and animals congregate at waterholes.
- Weather: Sunny days and cool nights.
- Note: Parks can be crowded; higher prices.
Green Season (Wet)
April - May
- Scenery: Lush, emerald green landscapes.
- Quiet: Very few tourists; intimate experience.
- Value: Lowest rates of the year (up to 40% off).
- Note: Some roads may be muddy; heavy afternoon showers.
Shoulder Season
June, November - December
- Balance: Good weather with fewer crowds than high season.
- Calving: Many animals give birth (Nov-Dec), attracting predators.
- Birding: Migratory birds arrive.
- Note: Short rains likely in November.
Regional Climate Guide
Kenya's geography is diverse, and so is its climate. Packing layers is essential.
Highlands (Nairobi, Masai Mara, Laikipia)
High altitude means cool mornings/evenings and pleasant days (20-25°C). Nights can get quite cold, especially in June-July.
The Coast (Mombasa, Diani, Lamu)
Hot and humid year-round (28-32°C). Ocean breeze helps. April-May sees the heaviest monsoon rains.
Arid North (Samburu, Tsavo)
Hot, dry bush country. Daytime temperatures can exceed 32°C. Very little rainfall compared to the highlands.
